When talking wind proof lighters, or lighters in general for that matter, Zippo is often what comes to mind.
At least there's no way of getting around it.
The world of Zippo is almost as vaste as whisky jugs, the classic, the annual, advertising and custom.
When it comes to custom there are a select few companies that are authorized to alter the exterior to the lighter and still market and sell it with the Zippo brand, logo and importantly; warranty.
I have tried to restrict my collecting. It is mainly themed on lighters with the Zippo logo, with Windy the "Zippo Girl" or where my collection grew out from; with a Camel connection.
Other brands of windproof lighter are plentiful. Some have worked around copyright laws others are plain and clear fakes.
I assume very few people that buy a lighter for $2.50 on eBay from China expect to receive a genuine Zippo, but there are seller that will try. Zippo is one of the brands where eBay is strickt to remove listings for fakes, which then have led to sellers stating "not Zippo" in the add, so they still show up in searches.
Zippo prices can be anything. Depending on what you want and where you look. The Zippo collectors market is huge and collectors often know what to ask, but any Zippo owned by the average Joe just looking for a few bucks can be a bargain. After all it's just a machined chunk of metal. Unused and factory fresh lighters can be picked up from $12-15 for the common official ones. Discount if it's used or especially if it got significant signs of wear. Then you move up into +$100 for some limited editions and +$1.000 for one-off prototypes that somehow made it to the open market.
Have a look at my collection of genuine ones... or have a look at the cheapos.
And of course, just as setting limits to your collecting any collection can be stretched out of it's original confinements.
In the case of Zippo I have also gathered some original Zippo advertising and sales display items.
I think it's called "ambiance"...
As noticeable there's what I call cross collecting between Zippo and Camel, I'm not sure anymore what led to what, but you will find these in both categories. One thing springs out of another, so I've also amassed other types of lighters, other brands of oil lighters as well as disposable ones.
