Founded in 1868 by W. A. Gaines.

During prohibition it was owned by American Medical Spirit Company and one of only six distilleries that were allowed to distill and bottle spirit.

After the prohibition in 1934 it was bought by Old Crow and remained in operation until 1987 when it was purchased by Jim Beam only to be closed down.
