Distilling allegedly started at this site as early as 1770. Legally it dates to 1818, which is before the excise act.
Originally named The Hosh it changed name to Glenturret in 1875. The name being taken from a former nearby distillery.
It was dismantled in 1928, but rebuilt in the original buildings by James Fairlie in 1960 with old stills from Tullibardine.
From 2002 to 2018 it was owned by Edrington and housed “The Famous Grouse Experience”, until sold to Lalique Group.
The distillery was also the home of Towser the Guinness World Record holding cat. In it’s 24 year life between 1963 to 1987 it is recorded to have killed no less than 28.899 mice.
