The island of Arran has a long history of distilling but after the original Lagg distillery closed in 1837 there was not a legal distillery on the island until the new Arran Lochranza distillery opened in 1995.
They produced both peated and un-peated whisky until they expanded and built the new Lagg distillery at the south end of the island. Arran now only produces un-peated whisky and the production of peated are done at Lagg.
